How to Grow an Instagram Account From Scratch in 2026
Starting a new Instagram account in 2026 is easy. Growing it is where most people struggle. The platform has matured, competition is fierce, and the algorithm rewards accounts that provide genuine value.
But here's the good news: Instagram still has massive organic reach potential — especially through Reels. A new account can reach thousands of people within weeks if the content strategy is right.
Step 1: Define Your Account's Purpose
Before posting anything, answer these questions:
The Niche Selection Framework
Good niches for new accounts:
- Specific enough to stand out (not "fitness")
- Broad enough to create 100+ posts (not "left-handed basketball drills")
- Commercially viable (advertisers pay for this audience)
- Something you can create consistently
Examples:
- "Home workouts for busy parents" (specific + viable)
- "Budget meal prep for students" (specific + viable)
- "Instagram growth for small businesses" (specific + viable)
- "Minimalist design inspiration" (specific + viable)
Step 2: Optimize Your Profile
Profile Picture
- Clear, recognizable at small sizes
- On-brand colors
- 400x400px minimum
- Face photos outperform logos for personal brands
Username
- Simple and memorable
- Easy to spell
- Include a keyword if possible
- Avoid numbers and underscores
Name Field
- This is searchable! Include your keyword
- Example: "Sarah | Instagram Growth Tips"
- Not just "Sarah" — maximize discoverability
Bio
- Line 1: What you do / who you help
- Line 2: Your unique value
- Line 3: Social proof or credibility
- Line 4: CTA
Link
- Use a link aggregator (Linktree, Stan Store, Beacons)
- Include 3-5 key links
- Update regularly
Highlights
- Create 4-6 Highlights before posting
- Cover topics: About, Tips, Reviews, FAQ, Contact
- Use branded Highlight covers
Step 3: Content Strategy for New Accounts
The First 9 Posts Matter
Your first 9 posts form your grid's first impression. Plan them carefully:
Post 1: Introduction — Who you are, what you'll share Post 2-3: Value posts — Teach something useful Post 4-5: Engagement posts — Ask questions, spark discussion Post 6-7: More value posts — Establish expertise Post 8-9: Community posts — Feature others, share behind-the-scenes
Content Pillars
Choose 3-5 recurring topics:
Example for a fitness account:
Each pillar should have a mix of:
- Carousels (educational)
- Reels (discovery)
- Static posts (aesthetic)
- Stories (engagement)
Step 4: Master Instagram Reels
Reels are the primary growth tool for new accounts. They get 2-3x more reach than static posts.
Reels Strategy for New Accounts
What to post:
- Quick tips and tricks
- Before/after transformations
- Trending audio with your twist
- Controversial opinions (backed by evidence)
- Relatable content for your niche
Technical tips:
- Hook in first 1-2 seconds
- Keep 15-30 seconds for maximum reach
- Add text overlays for silent viewers
- Use trending audio
- End with a CTA
Finding Trending Audio
Step 5: Strategic Hashtag Use
The 3-5 Rule
Use 3-5 highly relevant hashtags per post. This outperforms 30 random hashtags in 2026.
Hashtag research:
Example for a new Instagram growth account:
- #instagramgrowth (1M+)
- #instagramtips (500K-1M)
- #instagrammarketing (100K-500K)
- #socialmediatips (100K-500K)
- #growoninstagram (10K-100K)
Step 6: Engagement Strategy
Daily Engagement Routine (15 minutes)
Minutes 1-5: Reply to comments on your posts Minutes 6-10: Engage with 10 accounts in your niche (genuine comments, not "Nice!") Minutes 11-13: Engage with hashtags in your niche Minutes 14-15: Reply to DMs and Story mentions
Building Relationships
- Follow accounts in your niche
- Engage with their content consistently
- DM to build genuine relationships
- Collaborate when appropriate
- Feature others in your content
Step 7: Stories Strategy
Stories keep your existing audience engaged while Reels bring in new followers.
Daily Story routine:
- Post 3-7 Stories per day
- Use interactive stickers (polls, questions, quizzes)
- Behind-the-scenes content
- Share user-generated content
- Reply to every DM
Story Engagement Features
- Polls: — "Which topic should I cover next?"
- Questions: — "What's your biggest challenge with [topic]?"
- Quizzes: — Test knowledge about your niche
- Sliders: — "How relatable is this?"
- Countdowns: — Build anticipation for upcoming content

What to Avoid
Don't buy followers. Fake followers don't engage and hurt your engagement rate.
Don't use bots. Instagram detects and penalizes automation.
Don't follow-for-follow. These followers won't engage with your content.
Don't post without a strategy. Random posting confuses the algorithm.
Don't compare to established accounts. Focus on your growth trajectory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does it take to grow an Instagram account? A: Most accounts see meaningful growth (1,000+ followers) within 3-6 months of consistent posting. Growth accelerates after the first 1,000 followers as the algorithm gains confidence in your content.
Q: How often should I post on Instagram? A: Post 3-5 feed posts per week, 4-7 Reels per week, and Stories daily. Consistency matters more than frequency.
Q: Should I focus on Reels or static posts? A: Focus on Reels for discovery and growth, but maintain a mix of content types. Reels bring new followers; carousels and static posts engage existing followers.
Q: How important are hashtags? A: Moderately important. Use 3-5 highly relevant hashtags per post. They help with discovery, but content quality and engagement matter more.
Q: Can I grow on Instagram without showing my face? A: Yes. Theme pages, educational accounts, and meme pages can grow without showing a face. Focus on content quality and niche relevance.
Q: What's the best way to get followers as a new account? A: Create Reels targeting searchable topics, engage genuinely with your niche community, optimize your profile for conversions, and post consistently. There's no shortcut — quality content + consistency wins.
